Family Therapy (A Somatic Approach) for Families of African descent

Because trauma and early attachment disruptions can leave their mark on family members and shape how members relate, family therapy is a crucial part of healing for families and the individuals within them. A body-oriented, parts and trauma-informed approach to family therapy relies less on the verbal narrative and explores the non-verbal role of trauma (including racial, historical, and intergenerational trauma) on interactions in families. This holistic approach centers community, spirituality, and ancestral wisdom to support families in healing trauma, disconnection, and relational and communication issues. A somatic approach to family therapy uses mindful awareness (slowing down and noticing what’s happening in your bodies while interacting with each other) and body-oriented practices to support healing and transforming the ways you connect and relate to each other. The work within these sessions involves us bringing awareness to the patterns and narratives shaping the ways you relate to each other, building and strengthening resources together, and body-oriented practices for regulating emotional states and healing attachment experiences. While the work within these sessions is paced to each family member’s nervous system, some family therapy sessions may involve meetings with individual family members to support nervous system and attachment needs.

The Art of Healing offers family therapy using a somatic approach to adult families of African descent.

Family Therapy sessions are offered as 90 minutes.
